The clear answer

Medigap works alongside Original Medicare to help pay some costs, depending on the plan. It does not work as a supplement to Medicare Advantage. Evaluate the plan letter, premium and your enrollment rights together.

What to understand first

Use the questions below to compare the policy details with the need you want to address.

The trade-offs deserve a closer look

Outside protected enrollment situations, medical underwriting may apply. The fall Medicare enrollment period does not automatically create a right to buy any Medigap policy. Separate drug coverage may be needed.

Bring these questions to your conversation

Use these questions to compare options on the same terms. Ask where each answer appears in the official policy or plan materials.

  • Am I in a protected enrollment period?
  • What does this plan letter cover?
  • How might premiums change with age or renewal?
  • Do I need a separate Part D plan?

Medicare Supplement / Medigap: common questions

What does a Medicare Supplement policy do?

Medigap helps pay certain out-of-pocket costs under Original Medicare, depending on the standardized plan and contract. It is separate from Medicare Advantage and generally does not include current Part D prescription coverage.

When can I buy Medigap without health underwriting?

A federal Medigap open enrollment period and certain guaranteed-issue rights can protect access in defined circumstances. State protections may add rights. Outside protected periods, underwriting may apply. Verify your specific eligibility before making a change.

Do Medigap plans with the same letter have the same premiums?

No. Standardized core benefits can be the same while premiums, pricing methods and company practices differ. Compare the same plan letter and relevant policy details; premiums can change over time.

Will Medigap cover prescription drugs automatically?

Medigap policies sold today generally do not include prescription drug coverage. Many people with Original Medicare evaluate a separate Part D plan for that need. Existing older coverage requires its own review.
