The clear answer
Dental policies differ in networks, covered procedures, annual benefit limits and waiting periods. Preventive visits and major work may have very different cost-sharing rules. Ask your dentist for a treatment estimate before comparing a policy for planned care.
What to understand first
Use the questions below to compare the policy details with the need you want to address.
The trade-offs deserve a closer look
Dental annual maximum benefits are not the same as medical out-of-pocket maximums. A dental discount program is not insurance. Verify effective dates before scheduling treatment.
Bring these questions to your conversation
Use these questions to compare options on the same terms. Ask where each answer appears in the official policy or plan materials.
- Is my dentist participating?
- Are major procedures subject to a waiting period?
- What is the annual benefit maximum?
- Are implants or orthodontia covered?

Dental insurance: common questions
Why does dental insurance have an annual benefit maximum?
Many dental plans cap what the insurer pays for covered services during a year. That is different from a medical plan’s out-of-pocket maximum. After the dental benefit limit is reached, you may owe additional treatment costs.
Will a new dental plan cover a crown immediately?
It depends on waiting periods, prior treatment, frequency limits, the annual maximum and other terms. Get a written pretreatment estimate and verify the plan before scheduling major work.
Can I keep my dentist with any dental PPO?
Check the exact network. Out-of-network benefits, if available, can leave higher charges than in-network treatment. The term PPO does not guarantee participation by your dentist.
Is a dental discount plan dental insurance?
No. A discount arrangement generally provides access to negotiated prices, while insurance pays benefits under a policy. Compare membership charges, participating dentists and your responsibility for treatment.
