The clear answer

Medicare Advantage is an alternative way to receive Medicare-covered benefits through a private plan. Compare provider access, prescription coverage where included, referrals, authorizations and cost sharing. Extra benefits should support, not replace, that analysis.

What to understand first

Use the questions below to compare the policy details with the need you want to address.

The trade-offs deserve a closer look

Plan availability and rules depend on your service area. Networks and benefits can change. A zero-dollar plan premium, where offered, does not mean all Medicare costs are zero.

Bring these questions to your conversation

Use these questions to compare options on the same terms. Ask where each answer appears in the official policy or plan materials.

  • Are my doctors and hospitals in the specific plan network?
  • What prior authorization rules apply?
  • What is the in-network out-of-pocket limit?
  • How would travel or a move affect access?

Medicare Advantage: common questions

Does Medicare Advantage replace my Medicare eligibility?

No. It is a way to receive Medicare Part A and Part B benefits through a Medicare-approved private plan. You remain in Medicare and generally still pay the Part B premium, along with any applicable plan premium.

Can I keep every Medicare doctor with an Advantage plan?

Not necessarily. Network, referral and out-of-network rules depend on the plan type and contract. Confirm each doctor and facility using the exact plan and coverage year before enrolling.

Does a zero-premium Medicare Advantage plan mean no medical costs?

No. A zero plan premium does not eliminate the Part B premium, deductibles, copays or other eligible cost sharing. Review prescriptions, providers and the plan’s out-of-pocket limits.

Can I buy Medigap to pay my Medicare Advantage copays?

Medigap is designed to supplement Original Medicare, not Medicare Advantage. Changing between these coverage paths can involve enrollment timing and Medigap eligibility considerations. Review those before ending a plan.
