The clear answer
Whole life is a type of permanent life insurance. It combines a death benefit with a cash-value component, subject to the contract and premiums being maintained. It may suit a lasting need, but the premium commitment deserves as much attention as the benefit.
What to understand first
Use the questions below to compare the policy details with the need you want to address.
The trade-offs deserve a closer look
Cash value is not the same as freely accessible savings. Loans accrue interest and can reduce the death benefit. Dividends, where available, are not guaranteed. Early surrender may return less than premiums paid.

Whole life insurance: common questions
Are whole life insurance premiums and benefits guaranteed?
A whole life contract typically specifies guaranteed premiums, a death benefit and cash values if required premiums are paid and other conditions are met. Dividends and illustrated additions are generally not guaranteed. Separate the guaranteed columns from projections.
What happens if I borrow against whole life cash value?
A policy loan usually accrues interest. An unpaid balance can reduce the death benefit and cash available on surrender; a lapse with an outstanding loan may have tax consequences. Review the insurer’s loan terms with an agent and a tax professional.
Can I stop paying a whole life policy after a few years?
Only if the contract or an elected nonforfeiture option supports that outcome. Limited-pay whole life and ordinary lifetime-pay policies are different. Do not assume future dividends will cover premiums.
Why can early whole life surrender value be lower than premiums paid?
Premiums fund insurance protection and policy costs as well as cash value. Early surrender values can be low. Review the guaranteed cash-value schedule, surrender terms and alternatives before committing to a long-term premium.
